GENEVA COUNTY, Ala. — Last week, a post surfaced on the Facebook page “Let’s Talk Geneva” that offered house and yardwork services for free.
“We just thought it would be a cool idea to see who all really needed help and to put our usefulness out there,” said Spencer Taylor, an elder for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
That post ended up connecting Elder Spencer and Elder Rafe Palmer with residents across Geneva County.
“We definitely got a lot of love for that and there’s a lot of support to it,” Taylor said.
“It seems like a lot of people just love service,” Palmer said. “Having that chance to go and do it just gives us a chance to get out there.”
The two men aren’t originally from this area. Instead, they are on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
“We’re missionaries here and we serve the people in the Geneva area around Slocomb and Samson and Chancellor and Coffee Springs but we also have missionaries around the world,” Taylor said.
For many residents, Spencer and Rafe’s help couldn’t come at a better time. After storms ripped through the Wiregrass a few weeks ago, many people are dealing with limbs, leaves, and debris left in their yards.
“Usually it’s just us and we come and help do yardwork or clean or just anything that needs to be done around the house,” Taylor said.
All that being said, there are a few things Spencer and Rafe ask you to keep in mind.
“We can do inside the house work, it’s just there would have to be another male there while we’re serving just for safety reasons,” Palmer said.
“Roofwork we try not to do just because that’s kind of a safety issue,” Rafe said.
