DOTHAN, Ala. – Here we are nearly a month has gone by since we last had high school sports in the Wiregrass. Many didn’t know the last time they took the field would be the final time this season.
Dothan pitcher Jaala Torrence believed her final time in a Wolves uniform would be with a state championship in her hand.
“We wanted to win state and that’s what we we working for,” said Torrence. “We had all the capability of doing so. It was heartbreaking to know we wouldn’t have that opportunity.”
Torrence and the Wolves were off to a blistering start in 2020. Dothan was the top team in class 6A softball when the season was abruptly ended.
“It’s been hard just being at home and knowing during this time we would be playing in the heart of our season and getting ready for playoffs,” said Torrence. “It’s been hard, but I’ve been trying to stay productive and just get ready for the fall. Even now, I kind of think about it and and it sucks, but it is what it is. We can’t change it. I wish we could, but we just have to keep moving forward.”
From classwork and practices to now being at home, a normal day looks anything but normal for Torrence.
“When I was going to school it was like back to back to back to back,” said Torrence. “School, practice, then you’d have a game and then working out sometimes then coming home. Now, the days are slower. I still work out and then come home because I have 3 AP classes. So I come and do some work and then eat lunch and do something else. It’s slower days definitely.”
Jaala will see the softball field again in Tuscaloosa. Torrence is an Alabama softball signee and that has been a driving force for her through this ordeal.
“I’ve just been trying to stay productive with all this time that I’ve had,” said Torrence. “With working out, just trying to stay focused and strive toward my goal this fall with the Alabama softball team.”
