DOTHAN, Ala. – A Wiregrass group that has held a list of festivities on Martin Luther King Day weekend for more than thirty years has decided to cancel this year’s celebration in light of the pandemic.
But a member of the group is working to keep King’s dream alive at a distance.
Greater Beulah Missionary Baptist Church is sponsoring a shorter and socially distanced version of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance and Leadership Coalition’s celebration.
On January 18th at 10 a.m. instead of the traditional march from Plaza Two on Reeves Street to the church, participants are asked to motorcade.
Those wishing to march can but must follow social distance guidelines.
An outdoor memorial service will start immediately after the parade.
“We want to keep the dream alive keep it going keep the memory going so that it won’t die. My belief is if we don’t do it then it will be harder to do it again next year, so we want to continue to the dream,” says GBMBC Reverend Darryl Roberts.
The church invites local businesses and organizations to participate.
Those wishing to get involved or donate to the IMALC scholarship fund should contact the church.
