ALABAMA – What appeared to have been a fairly routine traffic stop on Saturday afternoon in Perth turned out to be much more than that thanks to some good police work.
State Police in Fulton County discovered that an Alabama man traveling through town was carrying an arsenal of illegal weapons in his car. During the search of the vehicle, State Police in Mayfield found two loaded handguns and an illegal AK-47 according to reports. While state police didn’t say where the out-of-town man was heading, or why he had the weapons on him, he didn’t have a permit to carry in the state of New York and was arrested on multiple counts and faces three felony counts.
According to State Police in Mayfield, the traffic stop took place on Saturday afternoon around 3PM. That’s when, according to the Times Union, Police say Joseph W. Mathis, of Jacksonville, Alabama was driving on Route 30 in Perth when he was pulled over.
During the stop, State Police noticed a gun box in the back of the vehicle and they proceeded with a search. That’s when they discovered a litany of high powered weaponry including two loaded handguns, multiple high capacity magazines, and an illegal AK-47 rifle.
Mathis now faces multiple charges including two Class D felonies and a Class C felony for Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree. According to sources he was arraigned in Perth Town Court and released with pre-trial conditions and is due back in court on April 5th.
