DOTHAN, Ala. — New Year’s Eve is finally here, but state troopers worry about an uptick in speeders when patrolling tonight because this will be one of the deadliest and worst times to be driving.
This is mainly because of the increase in traffic and amount of speeders around this time of year.
Alabama State Trooper Kendra McKinney believes this is due to the excitement to celebrate with loved ones.
“People do tend to speed they’re driving distracted because like I said they’re so excited they forget to focus on the road and to pay attention,” McKinney said.
Data showed the number of fatalities decreased this holiday season compared to last year. In 2019, 10 people died; this year, only seven deaths have been reported.
Drinking and driving is McKinney’s biggest worry.
“Drive the posted speed limit, wear your seatbelt,s and then most importantly, do no drink and drive by any means necessary.” she said.
If that warning isn’t enough, there will be an increased number of troopers patrolling the streets tonight looking for any lawbreakers so click it or ticket will be real tonight if you’re caught speeding on roadways.
The most important thing to remember when celebrating tonight is to just be safe and have a Happy New Year.
