ALABAMA – The morning after his home was damaged by a devastating tornado that ripped through central Alabama last Thursday, Birmingham TV meteorologist James Spann received a text message from a member of his daily prayer group.

It was from Steven Splawn, a Birmingham businessman who leads a group of men and women who get together on a Zoom call every morning for seven minutes of prayer and devotion. Spann joined the group about six months ago.

“He said, ‘Hey, I can get a team out there to help,’” Spann said today in an interview with AL.com. “I just didn’t know what to do.

“And he said, ‘We’re coming,’” Spann added. “He didn’t ask. He just said, ‘We’re coming.’”

Spann was on the air at ABC 33/40 Thursday afternoon when he found out his Shoal Creek home had been damaged by the tornado. His wife, Karen, had safely hunkered down in their basement tornado shelter, but their roof was damaged and trees were down all over their yard.
