DOTHAN, Ala. – A shower trailer for those living a homeless lifestyle has always been a wish of the Harbor Ministry until now.
By the hands of students and support from businesses, the community came together to make that wish reality.
The Showers of Blessing mobile unit was a class project some, a dream of the Harbor Ministry, and a cause donors were moved to support.
After weeks of work by Dothan Technology Center students, Grandview Baptist Church, and local businesses, the finished project was handed over to the harbor.
“It’s been a dream for a long time. And guess what it took what people say is the future generation to get it done. So thank you for being that generation. Good job,” says the Harbor Ministry executive director Kody Kirchoff.
A community project that will be used to serve the community.
The trailer will allow the Harbor to take showers directly to those who don’t have access to one otherwise.
“In over 30 years with education, I’ve never seen a single project such as this that epitomizes what we’re supposed to be doing. I cannot think of a more perfect tribute and a more perfect example of what things can look like when we work together,” says Dothan City School acting superintendent Dennis Coe.
“When you can take content, you’re supposed to learn and you have practical application and it provides for a positive outcome for your community that’s what education is all about,” says Dothan City School director of career technology education and workforce development Chris Duke.
While students learned how to install walls, run wires, and build staircases they were taught the lesson of giving back and the project they completed in just two and half months will make a lifetime impact.
“This is going to be traveling around this community for years and years and years. You’re still going to be seeing this in the community blessing a lot of lives,” says Kirchoff.
“It makes my heart just smile so big that my students got to do something like this,” says DTC building construction instructor Bob Griggs.
The shower trailer’s main purpose is serving the local homeless population, but it could also be used by the public after natural disasters.
