Wiregrass schools collect more than 25,000 canned foods

DOTHAN, Ala. – Every year WTVY and the Cochran Firm team up with the Wiregrass Area Food Bank for the Miracle on Foster Street Food Drive. The Wiregrass Area Food Bank’s shelves are left bare after feeding Wiregrass families on Thanksgiving. The need at Christmas is just as great, so we use this opportunity to help refill the food bank.

This year the pandemic has left families struggling even more. That’s why this year WTVY challenged our local Wiregrass schools.

We asked each elementary, middle, and high school homeroom (or 1st period class if homeroom is not available) to keep up to date with the amount of canned food and non-perishable food items they accumulated so it can be reported to our reporter at the end of the competition.

Wiregrass schools went above and beyond expectations we had even set, one school collecting more than 8,000 items for our local Wiregrass Area Food Bank.

Our top finisher in the elementary school category was Mrs. Hughes 2nd grade class at Mulkey Elementary with 4,353 cans. For the middle school we had Mrs. Jenkins class at Samson Middle School with 308 cans and Mrs. Neilson’s class at D.A. Smith with 120 cans. Finally, our top spot at the high school level was Mrs. Hart’s class with 517 cans.

For the school-wide totals we have Mulkey Elementary finishing in the top spot with 8,783 cans collected, in second we have Carver with 4,581 cans and in third we have Wicksburg with 3,223 cans.
