DOTHAN, Ala.— The Wiregrass Public Safety Center has provided multiple opportunities for different types of training including training for volunteer fire departments.
For the past six months, volunteer fire departments around Houston County have been holding a training every second Tuesday of each month.
There are about 300 volunteer firefighters in Houston County.
“We started this with two or three departments, and like I said, being the vice president of the association I’ve tried to push this to all the departments in Houston County, and I think we got 8 or 9 departments throughout Houston County represented here tonight,” Kinsey Fire Chief Jason Reneau said.
During the past few months, volunteers have been watching training videos and learning tactics for all kinds of emergency situations.
“We started off with people who didn’t have any firefighting training,” Reneau said. “Got them to learn how to put on and off their turnout gear and we’ve kind of built-up to this. Tonight where they can actually go in, they’re actually searching for a nut and a bolt inside this facility and they’ve got to pair them together and bring them out. So, you know its a little test to see exactly what they’ve learned over the past couple of months.”
