SPLC wants Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall investigated

DOTHAN, Ala. -The Southern Poverty Law Center is demanding an investigation to determine if Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall had a role in organizing protests that turned violent.

Marshall is chair of a Republican Attorney Generals Association related group that apparently authorized robocalls urging supporters of President Trump to protest election results in Washington on Wednesday. Those protests turned violent when a mob stormed the Capitol. Five people died.

“Any involvement by Marshall or his organization in Wednesday’s desecration of the US Capitol deserves thorough scrutiny – but not from the very people who promoted Trump’s attempt to stop the democratic transition,” Margaret Huang, CEO and President of the SPLC Action Fund said in an emailed statement.

She wants investigations conducted by the Alabama Ethics Commission and Alabama Bar Association.

Marshall, who chairs the nonprofit Rule of Law Defense Fund, has denied knowledge of the calls and has also called for an investigation. Along with others, he had hoped President-Elect Joe Biden’s win would be overturned.
