DOTHAN, Ala. — The Southeast Alabama Community Theater (SEACT) has continued one activity that has suffered tremendously from the COVID-19 pandemic: live theater.
A branch of SEACT, the Wiregrass Drama Club has continued rehearsals as it prepares for the Alabama Youth Theater Experience competition.
“We’re wearing our masks at all times,” said Brook Phillips, the Education Coordinator for SEACT and the Wiregrass Drama Club. “But the children are wonderful. They’re giving their hundred percent all the time. The worst thing is that we can’t see their facial expressions but they’re fully into it with their bodies and their choreography so it’s been great. It has been an adjustment.”
The club is completely made up of kids from around the Wiregrass. Their upcoming competition will take place on the first weekend of March and will include eight different ensembles from around the state.
“We have children that are homeschooled within our group and some of their activities have been cut back,” Phillips said. “We have children that have gone to remote learning, so they’re really not able to be with their friends. And then we do have those that are going to traditional school but all of them seem very excited to be here and to spend time with their peers.”
The group will be performing Seussical: The Musical, a mix of all Dr. Seuss stories, mostly based off of the famous Horton Hears a Who.
The Wiregrass Drama Club members say they look forward to continuing rehearsals and hitting the road to competition
