Protecting plants amid a cold snap in the Wiregrass

DOTHAN, Ala. — Over the past several weeks, the weather has been warm peaking at about 86 degrees which is the highest temperature so far this year.

“We have seen a lot more people who can’t quite go on vacation where they want to so they wanna get out in the yard make their house prettier and with the warm weather people been buying flowers, they been buying vegetables that kinda thing,” Dothan Nurseries Owner J.D. Boone said.

As we’re bringing in the new month, cold weather is making its presence again. The National Weather Service is warning people to protect their plants from the cold temperatures which could get down into the 30s for the next couple of nights.

“The only issue I’m gonna see with this cool-weather we’re gonna have is some of those flowers and vegetables. The cold weather won’t kill them but it will make em wilt a little bit, it may make them a little ugly,” Boone said.

Dothan Nurseries owner J.D. Boone says there are some tips you can follow to help keep your garden looking beautiful in the midst of cold weather so that your hard work doesn’t go to waste.

“The two main things you can do if you have vegetables or if you have some of the flowers you’re worried about is to go ahead and water them well today and then cover them with a sheet like a bed sheet or something you don’t want to cover them with plastic because you want to cover it with something where they can breathe,” Boone said.

Boone says if you have citrus trees, shrubs, and roses they’ll be fine since there shouldn’t be any freezing temperatures in the Wiregrass.

If you have any concerns, you can contact Dothan Nurseries and they’ll let you know if your plants can be saved.
