A brave woman in Utah, risked two lives to rescue her neighbor’s life. Sarah Maughan is four and a half months pregnant but this did not dissuade her from jumping into action immediately after learning that a fire had broken out in her neighborhood on Friday. “I barely knocked on the door and the guy was asleep,” recalled Maughan during an interview with local ABC station KTVX.
She screamed and banged the door in the hopes of waking up the man who was clearly unaware of the fiery situation outside his home. “I came over to make sure nobody was in and I banged on the guy’s door and he looked like a deer in headlights and his jaw dropped,” she said, adding that “he barely made it out.”
“I just felt the heat. Yeah, it was intense. Banged on the door. He came to the door. I said, ‘Your house is on fire.’ He saw the flames in the garage and his mouth just dropped. He was dead asleep. Surprised! (The fire) already to the doorway as we’re running (away),” she said according to NBC affiliate KSL-TV.
Although she admitted that it wasn’t the best move for a pregnant person, Maughan did not want any casualty, especially when it could have been prevented. “I just reacted. Probably not the best idea, you know, being pregnant. But you know, I would hate to see the fire and know I didn’t do anything and somebody died,” she explained.
Maughan, who lives a couple of blocks away from the man’s place, revealed how she saw the flames from her house. Without giving much thought, she rushed to start her car and drove towards it hoping to see if she could help her neighbors.
As she pulled up near the house, many people were already on their porches. At that point, she didn’t think about asking if anyone was still in the house, instead, she ran up to it. When asked why she put herself in danger to save someone, Maughan expressed her hope that someone else would do the same for her family. “I just want people to start caring about one another,” she noted.
As for the neighbor she saved, he “was very grateful” for her efforts. “We were just kind of hugging each other,” recalled the pregnant woman. She also recalled him telling her, “I would have been dead if you hadn’t banged on that door.”
Now Maughan wasn’t the only hero that day, two West Jordan police officers rushed into a burning house next door and brought a woman and her dog to safety.
Local fire officials told KTVX that many buildings were destroyed as a result of the fire but thankfully no one was seriously injured. Investigators believe that the fire started in the garage area, however, they are working on determining the exact cause of the fire.
