DOTHAN, Ala. – Southeast Health anticipates 1950 doses of a COVID vaccine will arrive at the Dothan hospital soon.
Those will be among about 41,000 Pfizer doses that will be shipped to Alabama, once the Federal Drug Administration approves its emergency use.
The vaccines will be administered to front line hospital workers, first responders, and nursing homes residents, according to State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris.
He has not disclosed the 13 or so hospitals that will receive initial vaccine shipments though several, like Southeast Health, have confirmed they will be among those recipients.
Southeast Health spokesperson Mark Stewart would not predict when vaccines will arrive in Dothan, reiterating that (as of Friday evening) FDA approval is still needed.
However, Dr. Harris expects shipments to be in Alabama early next week and some hospitals have confirmed publicly they expect to receive them then.
Additional supplies will provide a second dose of the two-dose vaccine treatment that Pfizer claims is 95 percent effective.
Moderna, another vaccine, is expected to begin shipping soon. Unlike Pfizer’s product, it requires no refrigeration.
