Missionaries spreading spirituality amid COVID & Capitol chaos

DOTHAN, Ala. — Elijah Dailey is a Mormon missionary that has spent the past four months in Dothan. Originally from Ogden, Utah, he started his mission in Northern Alabama 14 months ago.

“Our purpose is in all things that we do to invite others to come onto Christ by receiving the restored gospel of Christ through faith in Jesus Christ, his atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the holy ghost and enduring until the end,” said Dailey. “So just anything to invite people to come closer to Jesus Christ.”

Every six-week missionaries will move throughout the mission boundary. Elder Daily says their mission boundary is from Alabama to the Panhandle in Florida.

“I just got transferred here, I got moved to Dothan and I trusted there were some people that I was supposed to meet and I’ve loved it so far,” said Daily.

The pandemic has changed a lot for these missionaries. Currently, they are all in quarantine after being exposed to the virus and depending on technology like zoom to reach out to the community.

“The East Coast missionaries have been pretty locked down due to COVID,” said Dailey. “Like we are lucky that we have had some time to be able to visit people in person and such but missionaries on the east coast work remotely like this on zoom with a lot of people.”

Elder Dailey encourages open-mindedness, especially with all of the strife and division going on in our country.

“Well, the thing is, with the peace that Jesus Christ gives us, he says his peace he gives onto us but not as the world giveth. And so, if you think about it, it’s like when we’re close to Jesus Christ, we kind of don’t get caught up in the things of the world,” Dailey said. “We kind of just offer a refuge to people away from it. So we give them a chance to like connect spiritually and just find peace, despite the turbulent times. Whether or not people are religious or not everyone can agree that’s a good thing.”
