DOTHAN, Ala. – One person has died and a Calhoun County, Florida deputy sheriff shot at or near a sports complex in Altha, Florida, 55 miles south of Dothan.

The shootings occurred Saturday night in the area of Powerhouse Motorsports Park, according to multiple media reports and messages received by WTVY.

Neither the condition of the deputy, apparently shot in the upper leg, nor the identity of the person killed has been released, though unconfirmed reports indicate the fatality may be from Dothan. It is also unknown how many people have been wounded.

The shootings happened as nationwide protests in reaction the death of George Floyd, the Minneapolis man who died Monday while in police custody, turned violent, though there is no indication of a connection.

Powerhouse’s Facebook page shows a major car racing competition took place Saturday night and had been planned before Floyd died.

The park is located between Altha and Fountain, Florida.
