DOTHAN, Ala.— The minimum wage has sparked controversy recently, and as people try to survive off unemployment, the minimum wage remains $7.25 an hour in Alabama.

Many residents believe making wages low will warrant poor quality work.

“If you pay someone seven dollars you get seven dollars worth of work out of them.” resident, Michael Zimmerman said. “The bible says a workman’s work is higher so I believe that if you’re gonna have someone working for you, you need to pay them.”

Others said it isn’t enough with the costs of living constantly increasing.

“See the cost of living is one reason then every year costs of living goes up,” Lucious Robinson, resident said.

He also said how this forces residents to find other resources like taking on a second and/or third job just to make ends meet.

It’s a tug of war of opinions amongst residents from those believing the wage is livable, to those believing the minimum wage is not livable.
