DOTHAN, Ala. — A Houston County Commissioner is urging local residents to sign-up for the COVID-19 vaccine. It comes a day after the Alabama Department of Public announced a change in the eligibility requirements for receiving the vaccine.

In an Email to WDHN News Saturday afternoon, Commissioner Brandon Shoupe explained some Houston County residents were having trouble setting up an appointment to receive the first dose of the vaccine.

Commissioner Shoupe encouraged people to visit southeasthealth.org/covid19vaccine and schedule an appointment for their drive-through vaccine site.

((Note: A previous site had been mentioned in an earlier version of this story, but Commissioner Shoupe asked WDHN News to remove it due to very limited supply at that clinic))

On Friday, ADPH announced an updated vaccination allocation plan beginning Feb. 8. The expanded group will include residents aged 65 through 74, along with additional frontline essential workers.  Those workers include the following:

  • First responders
  • Corrections officers
  • Food and agriculture workers
  • U.S. Postal Service workers
  • Manufacturing workers
  • Grocery store workers
  • Public transit workers
  • People who work in the education sector (teachers, support staff, community college and higher education)
  • Childcare workers
  • Judiciary (including but not limited to) circuit judges, district judges and district attorneys

Southeast Health announced Friday it would begin administering the vaccine to the expanded group on Feb. 8, following ADPH guidelines. The hospital encouraged people to make an appointment using the online self-scheduling portal on their website:  www.southeasthealth.org/covid19vaccine/

“If you meet the current eligibility requirements and have problems making an appointment in Houston County, please let me know.” Commissioner Shoupe said in the Email.
