Downtown Dothan electric car charging station nears completion

DOTHAN, Ala. – Dothan Utilities stopped by downtown earlier to test the newly installed electric vehicle rapid chargers.

Funding for the charging station comes from an Alabama Municipal Electric Authority Grant.

Electric and hybrid vehicle owners will pay per kilowatt-hour or about 60 cents a gallon.

An hour charge would equal around 100 miles depending on the type and efficiency of a car.

You won’t be able to just pull up and charge.

The charging station requires a ChargePoint account and members pay using the ChargePoint app.

In about four weeks, the charging station will be ready so while you’re in downtown grabbing a bite to eat or shopping, you can charge up.

“We wanted to find a location central to Dothan so folks passing through could come see our beautiful downtown and what a better way to bring folks down here to help with the vendors and restaurants and things down here in the area,” says Dothan Utilities assistant director Chris Phillips.

There is potential for other charging stations in the future if the city commission desires.
