DOTHAN, Ala. — Dothan planning commission held a rezoning public hearing and with this being the first meeting there were still some questions out there such as what kind of multifamily housing and how many units which is unclear at this early stage.
In attendance, applicant Clint Shelley showcased the subject map to the panel of commissioners as he represented Mike Patel who owns the property, concerned residents came out in full force to voice their opinions on why they don’t want to rezone the area for apartments.
“Multifamily dwellings are inconsistent with the dwellings in this area,” a resident said.
“We have to pull out of our driveway to get on murphy mill…8 to 12 minutes between the hours of 7-30 to 8 o’clock sometimes to pull out from our driveway,” Talia Mills said.
Not only the school traffic I don’t know if yall realize but the people that come from Enterprise that comes to Target, Lowes, Kohls, Ulta they actually use Murphy Mill because they don’t wanna go down 84 and turn,” Kim Blocker said.
So after taking in numerous concerns, the decision was easy for the planning commission.
“Then I make a motion that RZ-21-00-15 be referred to the Dothan city commission for disapproval on behalf of this board,” Gayla White said.
Residents at the meeting believe the planning commission made the right choice.
Yeah, it was unanimous that they were all against it so that’s a big relief,” Blocker said.
I’m not against the city growing, I’m a business owner. I think apartments are needed but just not appropriate I don’t think its a good place. If it was further on the highway it wouldnt be an issue and I don’t think we would be here if it was a single-family such as garden homes or townhomes,” Mill said.
Residents say they hope Mr. Patel doesn’t appeal the disapproval recommendation. As of now, it will still go before the city commission.
