DOTHAN, Ala.— Covenant Preschool and Childcare will be closed for two weeks after both an infant and teacher were diagnosed with COVID-19.
Originally, the church canceled its childcare services for this past Sunday since the daycare and nursery programs share rooms. The child in question had not been at the daycare since Wednesday and showed no symptoms at that time.
The daycare was to open Monday after Covenant United Methodist Church reported that a sanitation crew was brought in to clean up the childcare area.
However, things changed after the church sent its teachers who were around the baby to get tested for COVID-19. No one was symptomatic, but one test came back positive.
“We feel the best decision at this time is to close our daycare facilities for two weeks effective immediately,” the church wrote in a letter to families. “We understand this may present a difficult situation for you given the short notice, but please know the safety of your child remains our top priority.”
Families with children enrolled in the preschool will not be charged over this two-week period.
In light of the pandemic, the preschool took extra precautions such as temperature screenings, increased cleaning, wellness checks, and face coverings for staff members as they work with children. Parents are also asked to wait outside instead of entering the building.
