DOTHAN, Ala. – According to the Alabama Department of Public Health, drug overdoses across the state increased by 20 percent from May 2019 to May 2020. So far in 2021, the Jefferson County Department of Health reports increasing numbers of overdoses.

If you or a member of your family is struggling with addiction or may be at risk of overdosing, here are resources that may help:

  • Substance abuse 24/7 helpline sponsored by the Alabama Department of Public Health: 1-844-307-1760. The statewide service is staffed by peer recovery support specialists from the Recovery Organization of Support Specialists (ROSS) to help individuals navigate treatment and recovery systems.
  • The Addiction Prevention Coalition of Birmingham can direct you to resources around the state. The Coalition also has free Deterra Safe Medication Disposal bags that can be picked up and used to clean out medicine cabinets.
  • Alabama Department of Public Health naloxone training program. Individuals around the state can receive training and a naloxone kit in the mail. Visit the link or, if you have questions, email [email protected] or call 205-930-1065.
