DOTHAN, Ala. — As gas prices rise, grocery prices are also expected to increase, according to a report by the U.S Department of Agriculture.
But at independent grocery store, Shur Value, prices are staying steady.
“Personally I don’t see it going up to the level that they’re claiming,” Kyle Moulton, store manager said.
Economists predict the cost of food will increase from 1 percent to 2 percent this year. It’s a prediction that worries local grocers like Moulton.
“You can not lose a grocery business,” Moulton said. “We can not lose a grocery business, we can’t take groceries that high of a level.”
Moulton says he hopes Shur Value’s low prices will keep customers coming back.
“Well I come to Shur Value because it’s the cheapest place I know,” said frequent shopper, Amos Sanders.
“You’re not gonna find these for $1 on a daily so that’s like a dollar a piece, they’re like anywhere from $1.69, $1.89, $2 so you’re not going find this is a great deal,” said shopper Shira Ceasar.
Plus, with no surcharges on groceries, employees said customers will find the best deals inside Shur Value aisles.
Shur Value is located on West Main Street in Dothan.
