DOTHAN, Ala. – The Alabama Crimson Tide has declared the College Football Playoff National Championship title after defeating Ohio State 52 to 24.
As the celebration of the win goes across the state, several here in the Wiregrass made their way to Academy Sports and Outdoors to be the first to get their official CFP gear.
The store opened their doors to fans shortly after Alabama earned their 18th national championship.
However, customers are not waiting outside in crowded lines, they are waiting in their cars
Academy prepared for a large outcome of fans after an Alabama win ahead of time. They adjusted the shopping experience in light of COVID-19 to prevent overcrowding inside and outside of the store.
Customers check in through a QR code to get in line virtually.
“Everyone’s had a really good attitude with this type of thing,” Robert Satchfield, Hardlines Manager, said. “They understand the safety concerns, they still want to come in and have the fun which we are all about, but everyone wants to be safe and everyone’s playing along with it. So, we are happy to have that kind of turn out and have everyone follow those rules we’re setting”
Although there were changes, the tradition continues.
“Look, I called before the game was over, ‘Are y’all going to be open? Are y’all going to be open?‘ and they said ‘Yes,’ I’ll be there,” Marlena Grider, Alabama fan, said.
A winning ending for the Crimson Tide, closing a historical season with a national championship.
“It’s Covid safe, wear your mask, social distance…roll tide roll,” LaToya Patton, Alabama fan, said.
Academy will continue to have CFP gear today during regular store hours.
