DOTHAN, Ala. — With Dothan City Schools deciding to only require teachers to wear masks, WDHN wanted to know what it houston county schools going to do.
According to Houston County Schools superintendent Brandy White, school leaders have made a decision they think will be the best decision for their students.
“With the governor lifting the mask mandate we started looking at our data and looking at our options there and we feel like we give the teachers and the students the choice of whether they would like to wear the masks or not,” White said.
He said the decision to wear their masks or not is up to the students but they still plan on keeping them safe.
White said the schools will still provide n-95 masks if anyone is uncomfortable but with only 1.3 percent of students getting sick and, with no severe cases, he feels like lessening restrictions for students is a safe decision.
“The masks will really be the only thing we’ll still try to continue our cleaning and all other guidelines,” White said.
Alabama Education Association board members believed this was the best decision because it leaves the mask choice up students and their parents. This provides freedom for people to decide what’s best for each individual household.
“I am in full support of what houston county is doing with the governor lifting the mandate,” UniServ Director at AEA, Rhonda Hicks said.
Hicks is confident that their plan is what will keep students, faculty, and staff of Houston County Schools safe.
“With the continued cleaning of the classrooms and buses I have no doubt that Houston County and Mr. White will keep everyone safe as possible,” Hicks said.
