DOTHAN, Ala. – Thanks to a partnership with organizations here in the Wiregrass thousands of sweet potatoes made their way to pantries of local ministries and agencies to help feed those in need.
Less than ten people made a difference in the Wiregrass community on Monday, June 29, by loading and unloading 16-thousand pounds of sweet potatoes. The Society of St. Andrew-Alabama partnered with The Harbor and Covenant United Methodist Church to distribute the sweet potatoes.
The groups accomplished the “crop drop” in a little over two hours while wearing masks and social distancing. Ministries and agencies who picked up the vegetables were able to stay in their cars to have limited contact and do their part to deter the spread of coronavirus.
Alabama program coordinator, Adrienne Standridge said now is a crucial time to give back.
“We want to help bridge the gap. We do not want anybody to worry about how they are going to put food on the table or how they are going to have to choose to pay for their medicine or put gas in their tank. We know there are people in need especially in these times of COVID-19,” Standridge said.
Volunteers said it was a rewarding experience to help those in need during these times. The group said they are not sure when it will take place, but they are looking forward to participating in another crop drop soon.
