DOTHAN, Ala.— Dothan and several other urban areas in Alabama will soon receive money from a $17 million grant to help maintain their public transportation.

The grant comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration, which has given the money over to the Alabama Department of Transportation as parts of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

“This historic $25 billion in grant funding will ensure our nation’s public transportation systems can continue to provide services to the millions of Americans who continue to depend on them,” said Elaine L. Chao, U.S. Transportation secretary.

The following areas will be given money from the grant:

  • Anniston
  • Auburn/Lee-Russell
  • Daphne-Fairhope
  • Decatur
  • Dothan
  • Florence

The funds will be used for “operating, preventive maintenance, and capital expenses, including replacement buses and vans.”

“We know many of our nation’s public transportation systems are facing extraordinary challenges and these funds will go a long way to assisting our transit industry partners in battling COVID-19,” said K. Jane Williams, FTA acting administrator. “These federal funds will support operating assistance to transit agencies of all sizes providing essential travel and supporting transit workers across the country who are unable to work because of the public health emergency.”
