Budget chairman promises state will not tax stimulus checks

DOTHAN, Ala. – A powerful lawmaker promises that Alabamians will not have to pay state taxes on Cares Act stimulus checks they received.

“(Passing a bill) will be first on the agenda when we go into session the first week of February,” Representative Steve Clouse (R-Ozark) said Thursday in Dothan.

A bill that would have exempted state taxes on those stimulus payments—most adults received $1200–stalled this year when lawmakers recessed early because of coronavirus.

Clouse, who chairs the House Ways and Means Committee, said refunds will be given to those who pay taxes on federal stimulus payments before a bill passes.

Federal taxes will also not be owed on the payments.
