DOTHAN, Ala.— As the pandemic continues to spiral out of control, local retailers are continuing to suffer from it, now they are requesting the state’s help.
Struggling retailers have several things they would like to address such as tax exemptions, liability for employees, and state unemployment taxes that are set to increase by 92 percent for employers.
One of the biggest issues is tax exemptions.
“An exemption on state on income taxes against any federal relief money that any of us business owners were able to get this past year,” Alabama Retail Association board member, Susan Anderson said.
If this gets exempted Eagle Eye Outfitters, along with several other businesses will have to pay a huge state income tax.
She wants legislators to stay pro-business. Many retailers shared how abandoned they feel by the state and to keep these local retailers in mind.
“When they’re making these decisions think through on how that can potentially impact our bottom line, a lot of us are just making it to week to week from the revenue we’re able to get in, because a lot of our sales have declined so much,” Anderson said.
