ALABAMA – More than 5,000 Alabamians have died due to the coronavirus, and the virus doesn’t appear to be slowing down.
The Alabama Department of Public Health reported 86 new virus deaths on Thursday afternoon, bringing the state’s total to 5,080 in less than a year. That’s four times more than died of the flu in 2018 – the last year for which data was available, and the worst year for flu deaths here since at least 2014.
In Jefferson County, the most populous county in the state and home to Birmingham, nearly 750 people reportedly died – the highest total in the state. But other, less populous areas have suffered disproportionate death tolls over the last several months.
