DOTHAN, Ala. — Brandon Shoupe, chairman of the Houston County Republican Party, issued a statement Wednesday condemning the riots in Washington, D.C.

Shoupe called the riots “revolting and un-American,” saying that Americans must follow the rules of a republic, settling differences through elections and the court system.

I recognize that people are frustrated and angry with the lack of redress on many issues. However, as President Washington alluded to in his farewell address, it is our duty as citizens to accept and live under our nation’s government:

‘The very idea of the power and the right of the people to establish government presupposes the duty of every individual to obey the established government.’

This is a dark day for our nation. And this attempt to intimidate a duly elected legislative body must not stand.
