DOTHAN, Ala. – Eight Wiregrass high school students will compete in a speech contest for a share of over $7,500 in scholarships on Martin Luther King Day weekend.

Proclaiming America’s Call for Equality is holding its sixth annual Freedom Speaks: The Call of Lincoln and King speech competition on January 17th at Wiregrass Church in Dothan.

Students will recite President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address or a pre-selected portion of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s I have a dream speech.

They will also present a speech of their own responding to the prompt, “If you wrote a speech today, what would your title be and what would be your message to society?”

Students will be judged on dress and overall appearance, delivery, style, and the quality and clarity of their presentation.

“Dr. King’s word and Abraham Lincoln’s words are their foundation and the words coming out of these students’ mouths and their speeches you never know we may be reaching back to their words one day and celebrating what comes from their hearts,” says PACE board member Billy McCarthy.
